N.P.Ramajayam(NPR) was a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and was elected as a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly,representing Mylapore constituency from 1996 to 2001
Mr Ramajayam was joined in the organisation as packer’s assistant in 1956 and worked as a Foreman in Composing Department of The Hindu, by his hardwork and dedication he served as General Secretary of the union for 32 years.He became the Joint Secretary of the Hindu Union in 1964, before being elected General Secretary in 1975.He worked as Lino corrector, Imposer and Make-up-man, before being promoted as Foreman in 1993.Mr Ramajayam was a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and was elected a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly,representing the Mylapore constituency from 1996 to 2001.The Hindu Managing Director, Mr N. Murali, said that Mr.Ramajayam was an outstanding and responsible trade union leader who maintained harmonious industrial relations in the institution.by his gentle persuasion and tactful dealing,Mr.Ramajayam was able to secure more benefits for the employees than aggressive union leaders could do.”He said Mr Ramajayam was one among the very few employees who had put in 50 years of service in the institution and was presented the award for meritorious service in January.“He was very attached to the newspaper, and though he belonged to a political party, never tried to bring in politics into the organisation or influence its editorial coverage. He looked on the management, the union and the newspaper as a larger family.“Mr Ramajayam considered it an honour to be the General Secretary of The Hindu Office and National Press Employees’ Union, especially in its Golden Jubilee year 2006.”In his 51st annual report to the union, he wrote: “As long as there is memory, there will be a sense of gratitude in my heart.”He vividly remembered his joining the organisation, serving the stalwarts such as Kasturi Srinivasan, Kasturi Gopalan, G. Narasimhan, S. Parthasarathy, and S. Rangarajan, as well as Mr. G. Kasturi and the current Board of Directors, as also the successive personnel managers of the company.
